The QiYi 2×2 Megaminx is properly called a kilominx. It is a dodecahedron with corners only, standing in the same relation to a megaminx as a 2×2 does to a 3×3.
That comparison is where people go wrong. A 2×2 is easy because six faces and eight corners is a small problem. Twelve faces and twenty corners is a different order of thing, and the first solve takes most people a good deal longer than they expect. That is the appeal rather than a warning.
The QiYi 2×2 Megaminx is a good route into minx puzzles. If you want to know whether you would enjoy a megaminx without buying one, this answers the question cheaply. It also stands on its own instead of being only a stepping stone.
No edge pieces means no long edge-pairing stage, so the solve stays quick once you know it.
