The Tornado V5 Pioneer sits at the top of QiYi’s X-Man line. It is the one to buy if you already know what you want a cube to feel like.
A 20-magnet ball core does the positioning. MagLev tensioning replaces the centre springs with repelling magnets, which cuts friction and does away with spring noise. The edge and corner magnets adjust independently, and every setting is numbered. The surface is UV coated for grip and scratch resistance. It measures 55.5mm.
Twenty core magnets is the number that matters on the Tornado V5 Pioneer. They pull each corner square as the layer closes, so a turn taken most of the way round is finished for you. That is what keeps fast solving accurate instead of merely quick.
Adjusting the edge and corner magnets separately is unusual. You can strengthen the corner pull for a more positive stop while leaving the edges lighter, which changes the feel of a solve more than tension alone will.
The Tornado V5 Flagship has twelve fewer core magnets and keeps its springs. Most solvers who try both end up preferring the Pioneer, though the Flagship has its following and the steadier spring feel suits some hands better.
Cubes dry out with use and start to feel scratchy. A few drops of GAN No.1 Lube Maintenance 10ml keeps the turning smooth and slows the wear.
