The Puppet Cube 1 is a 3×3 with the layers cut at uneven depths, so scrambling it produces a lopsided, stepped shape instead of a cube. Restoring the shape is the same thing as solving it.
The Puppet Cube 1 is harder to read than a mirror cube because the distortion is uneven instead of symmetrical. The pieces do not simply differ in height, they differ in shape, and telling an edge from a corner takes real attention until you learn the pattern.
Version 1 is the harder of the two Puppet Cubes, precisely because there are fewer ways of turning it. The V2 is a variation on the same idea and rather more forgiving.
Do not expect your 3×3 method to carry over. With so few ways of turning the puzzle, almost none of the standard algorithms work. You need a good deal more than a 3×3 solver’s knowledge to get through it. Solving it back to a cube shape is satisfying in a way a colour solve is not, because the progress is visible from across the room.
