Megaminx punishes imprecision more than almost any other event, because twelve faces leave nowhere for a misaligned layer to hide. The GAN Megaminx Maglev is GAN’s answer, and it borrows the whole of their 3×3 flagship technology.

Magnetic levitation replaces the springs. A 160-point ball-type magnetic core with an integrated shaft gives a strong pull and a fast return. Omnidirectional core positioning version 4.0, dual magnet rings and a 40-point axial system. Auto-alignment works to 15 degrees. Numerical tension and elasticity adjustment gives 36 hand feels. Corner cutting to 90 degrees, under a UV coating.

The auto-alignment is what changes megaminx times instead of only megaminx feel. Fifteen degrees does not sound like much, but turning five-sided faces at speed it removes most of the small corrections that break up a solve.

Numerical adjustment matters on the GAN Megaminx Maglev too. With 36 combinations you do not want to rediscover a good setting by trial and error, and because the settings are marked you do not have to.

MagLev matters more on the GAN Megaminx Maglev than it does on a 3×3. Twelve faces means twelve springs fatiguing at different rates, and a puzzle that drifts out of even tension is miserable to solve. Repelling magnets do not fatigue.

The base colour is cosmetic. Grey and black refer to the internal plastic showing through between the faces, not to any difference in the mechanism.

Cubes dry out with use and start to feel scratchy. A few drops of GAN No.1 Lube Maintenance 10ml keeps the turning smooth and slows the wear.
